Inset- a small illustration used to show orientation or an enlarged area of an illustration.

Call-out- an enlargement of text or other data to make it more legible or to bring attention to a key point.

Overlay- a transparent covering on board exhibits, which can be written on with a dry-erase marker. Additional artwork can be incorporated onto the overlay to add content to the base exhibit, or to cover up and change the information on the base exhibit.

Ghosting- the artistic effect of making a structure transparent and faded so that it may be seen through another structure or organ.

Storyboard- the draft phase of an animation. A series of illustrations are created to show an outline of the key points to be covered in the animation. These are used to demonstrate the content and flow of an animation.

Anatomical position- afigure positioned with legs together, feet flat on the floor, arms at sides and with palms up. Commonly used to show the relationship of structures to one another within the body.

Plane- an imaginary flat surface that passes through the body or organ to create a section.

Sagittal section- a vertical section which divides the body or structure into right and left parts.

Midsagittal section- a sagittal section through the midline.

Coronal (frontal) section- a vertical section which divides the body or structure into front and back parts.

Cross-section (axial) section- a transverse or horizontal section which divides the body or an organ into upper and lower parts.

Superior- situated towards the head or closer to the head than another structure if used in comparison.

Inferior- situated towards the feet or closer to the feet than another structure if used in comparison.

Anterior (ventral)- situated towards the front of the body.

Posterior (dorsal)- situated towards the back of the body.

Lateral- away from the midline of the body.

Medial- close to midline of the body.

Proximal- nearer to center of body than another structures.

Distal- farther away from the center of the body than another structure.
